Making a new exhaust
Well i'm not happy with the way my exhaust LOOKS..i love the can and the way it sounds...
But after i swap out the rear end of my EX250 for a 94+ EX500 (170/60-17) I want to do a little "bolt on" fab work. By modding my Full Yoshimura exhaust in to a "under" or side seat exhaust Like this guy did on his 500 http://bikepics.com/pictures/916186/ Only i want to make mine like a mid pipe in being it slips into place with out any modification to the can or header. Also i will use softer bent tubing. that will be supported by the "old" mount for the yoshi can and again where the Passenger pegs went(where the can will mount with a special bracket) And seeing that the ex500 rearsets and frame form more of a "one-piece" the "mid-pipe" will fallow the body lines. I have a rough sketch sitting in front of me right now i will finish up a few more sketches and scan it. And whats the longer exhaust going to do to my performance and tune?

First off I think you are dreaming on that rear tire. The stock ex500 has a 130/70r17 tire. The larger tire looks better, but depending on teh specific tire you choose, you may have a hard time fitting even a 140/70r17 or a 150/60r17. Even then with these larger than stock tire sizes, depending on the model you buy can rub the swingarm, chain and other parts back there.
I can pretty much guess that you wont get a 170 tire on that rear rim, and if you do you will be hard pressed to get it to seat right, and it will be very squeezed giving you a pretty extreme profile and very wierd handling. For the muffler question, you won't loose any noticable performance, however depending on how long it is and how much back pressure you have, you might have to re jet the carbs. If the carbs were already jet'd for the yosh pipe you should be good.

Yeh I remember that chart being put together. Again buyer be ware, not all of those bikes were stock when they tried those tires so there might have been modifications done to it before they bought it.
From my own experience I put a 140 tire on my ex and it rubber the swingarm and the underseat splashguard. It also lifted the bike somewhat nto too noticible, but it does. If you want the bigger tire you can swap a ninja 600d (I think its a 600d, you need to double check my memory) swingarm with little mod to the swingarm and it has a stock 160 or 170 rear tire.

you cannot run a 160 on an EX500 rim SAFELY. trust me. I know frm experience. its a 3.5" rear wheel, 150 is the MAXIMUM you can run. a 160 will just pinch and the sides will distort.

Well i'll just a Diablo 150/60-17....that will still look better then the 130/90-16

the ZX600D may be it, but its a 160 tire. although those were also a 16" wheel too not a 17 from the factory, but you can fit 17" rims I think. th ZX1000A swingarm will fit as much as a 170 in there, and a CBR600F2 rear wheel will bolt right up, all you have to do is make spacers and put a 520 sprocket on it. as luck has it, I've actualy got a ZX1000A swingarm laying here.

yeah, honestly I dont care much that the stock tire is about the size of a bicycle tire really.
but a 150 should be ok on that rim. |
