DMG/AMA Roadracing Rules
With the oddity of Daytona out of the way and the reat of the season looming large, one might ask "Where are the Ducati 848s?"
From Superbike Planet Buell 1125R & Other Massive Twins Legal In Daytona Sport Bike & Supersport by dean adams Friday, November 21, 2008 The DMG/AMA released the latest version of their rules package for American Superbike, Daytona Sport Bike and Supersport last Thursday night, in turn confirming that the make up for the Daytona Sport Bike and Supersport classes may be the oddest looking "middleweight" grid in history. 1100cc liquid-cooled, four-valve V-Twins will legally race against the top 600s in both the Daytona Sport Bike and Supersport classes. The newly released rules list as homologated machinery for both classes: Aprilia RSV, BMW HP2 Sport, Buell 1125R, Ducati 848, Honda CBR600RR, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, KTM Super Duke, Suzuki GSX-R600, Triumph Daytona 675, Yamaha YZF-R6. Interestingly, Ducati is limited to 848cc while Buell and other twins are 1100cc or better. It's been rumored for months that both former XBRR rider Jeremy McWilliams and Australian Garry McCoy will race Buells in '09 DMG/AMA action. Dyno numbers are apples and oranges in the best of circumstances. That said, the following numbers come from PR sources and an independent dyno facility: '08 Buell 1125R: 146 horsepower, 82 foot pounds of torque '08 Honda CBR600RR: 105 horsepower, 46 foot pounds of torque Even if the dyno numbers for the Buell were taken at the crankshaft and the Honda's from the rear wheel, there would still seem to be a rather wide difference between the two in terms of power. The BMW HP2 Sport (1170cc) is rated at 130 horsepower, 85 foot pounds of torque. DMG will be striving to make the Sport Bike and Supersport grids as equitable as possible. How this parity is accomplished with 130-140 horsepower motorcycles racing against 600s making dramatically less power may be interesting, to say the least, to watch. ENDS If I were able I would have Larry Pegrams last years 848 and be kickin asphalt! Or any of last years MotoST Aprilias, surely there is one lying around in someones garage...

I love watching all forms of racing but this is one screwed up system.
So where are the Japanese litre bikes this year in AMA ? It was weird watching 600 cc bikes running in the Daytona 200 and not litre bikes. I guess I really haven't kept up with AMA racing the last few years and now that it has changed ownership I need to read up on it. |

Yeah the AMA went to Formula Extreme rules 600s after the liter bikes were chewing thru Dunpop tires in about 11 laps. For safety and practicality the big bikes were just sprint raced and the 600s became the new 200 mile format on a revised course.
Now the liter bikes play the same rule in the Daytona Superbike class albeit with rules closer to the old literbike superstock class that became a GSXR1000cup class. Perhaps once DMG get the hang of timing and scoring to where they can determine a finish order they will see the disparity in running the 4 valve liquid cooled twins against 600ccs. If a few savvy racers were so inclined they could pull out their last years bikes and beat the hell out of "Daytona Sportbike" and Superport. Doug Polen and Larry Pegram for starters. They have prepped 848s that they raced last year. The only problem is that they are too old for the 16-19 year old supersport class and they would be cherry picking in the Daytona sportbike class. World Champ Polen isn't coming back to play with the likes of Bostrom, Eslick, and Hayes...

I like that buell is out ther... But why the special treatment?
And the 1125r had trouble staying with the 600s... Interesting |

Buell was like, oh our 1125 R wasn't developed to race, it is supposed to be a first class street bike, and now the website and press releases are all, Buell taking the top speed honors and Buell on the front row, Buell sets fast time...
