Serious question: would you consider that better or worse gear than sneakers? At least rollerblades have a hard shell.

Worse. Aside from ankle protection, a good oil resistant sole with some traction is imperative for comfident footing at a stop. As I said above, when he stops and has to put a foot down, even just in his own driveway, he's not going to have secure footing.
