Default So I was gifted another '88 Hawk GT

Long story...but basically, wife has a friend whose husband died a while back and she wants his old bike out of the house. Didn't know the guy well, didn't even know he rode or let alone had such great taste in bikes. Shoulda seen my face when the garage door opened! Sad part, other than the guys passing is that the tank is rusted all to hell inside. Bike sat for three years and well, it's pretty nasty in there. The outside of the tank is in good shape as is the rest of the bike.

Never had to deal with this problem before but I've heard the diesel and BB's idea and then there's the hard chemicals or the electrolysis methods. Because I've already got a perfectly functioning Hawk, I really don't see spending much getting her up and running again so what's the cheap way to fix this? Is there a cheap way to fix this? I know...I know the carbs!!! I can handle that, just want to know if the tank is a goner before I go rebuilding other stuff.

I posted about the product Rusteco the other day.

I haven't used it yet but they claim to remove surface rust without affecting paint, rubber or any other surfaces.

If you try it, I'd love to hear your feedback.

Por15 is supposed to have a tank kit. Alternately, f2/f3 tanks are a fairly easy swap and give more range. I'm looking for a good one for my hawk

There's a Rad shop here that does wonders with old rusted tanks. They basically clean it out and then coat the inside. It solves the problem and you never have to worry about Rust again. They also do this for our rotted out oil pans at work and they're better than new.

I think this brings the total count of hawks on the board to three and none of them are rideable
