Win7/Vista gadgets. List yours
I found a kick as internet radio gadget and the 80's channel plays hit after hit. Non-of that "who the hell is this" shit.
Aji's Online Radio 2.0 Clocktopia (v1-5) has some nice clocks. There's some tv ones I'm still figuring out. Nothing like watching some russian channels. |

None. They use up too much screen real estate, for my liking.

I'm boring. Clock, calendar, weather, newsfeeds with only feeds from DPReview.
Only if you have them set to always be on top. If not, then they take up nothing.

Because they ARE on your desktop, not in your applications, and the Windows logo key + D allows you to instantly minimize all windows and show the desktop. Logo+D also restores all windows.

I think I'm not making my point clear - I use my desktop space for shortcut icons for commonly used apps - I don't want widgets EVER to be in the way of those icons.

Well that's a different story. I prefer to keep my desktop relatively uncluttered and the few shortcuts that I do put there are typically on the left and top.

I used to be that way, too. But there's so many tools I need to use for my work these days, my list of must-have shortcuts has grown. It's so much faster than drilling down the Start menu and easier than having a shit-ton of pinned items on my Start bar.

Very short list.

Have you considered using folders that are pinned as hidden shortcut bars? Just put the link in a folder and then drag the folder to the edge of the screen, making it a shortcut bar. It's efficient and keeps the desktop clean.
