Yeah, I'm struggling with the concept of being smart enough to cure cancer, but yet too fucking stupid to back up your data.
I just thought it would be ironic if they really were on to something, and some self-serving thief looking to sell a stolen laptop for $50 were to have deprived mankind of the cure. It's kind of the classic biblical tale of self-destructive human behavior that's the stuff of movie scripts...

Guys, I do computer work for professors, some of them leaders in their fields, every working day.
I've had to do data recovery for a brilliant engineering prof because his hard drive was trashed by optimizing software, because his only copies of important research were on that computer. The computer had a Zip drive, a LS-120 drive, and a CD burner, but he had never done a single backup. To top it off he did exactly the same thing, a week later, but still hadn't backed anything up. Then there's the book writing politics prof who freaked out, because the computer with his manuscripts on it was dead one morning. He went to great pains, to tell me just how important it was that he get this data back. I turned on the power bar. I used to do drudge work for an engineer who could do circuit layouts in his head, but who couldn't format a diskette for himself. Brilliance in one aspect of life doesn't imply even functional knowledge in another.
