It's because they're made to do that. Inside your battery is a smart charging circuit that decreases the amount of charge the battery will accept over time. This prevents the laptop fires from a few years ago.

I don't have an online reference to point you to, just something a very knowledgable co-worker told me. Seems the solution not only saved Dell a shitload of money on future lawsuits, but they are also making a killing selling replacement batteries now.

What I've found with phones, is that if you charge them while they are on, they last nowhere near as long as if you charge them while they're off. It wouldn't surprised me that your laptop does the same thing.

A few things:

A) Thanks for the "surge the NiCad" link...I was looking for that info, I had seen it before (actually plans to build a NiCad "zapper", but couldn't find the info again).

B) LiIon batteries SUPPOSEDLY don't have "memory", but seem to benefit from the occasion "deep-cycle" anyway.

C) I don't think having your phone on or off while charging makes that much of a difference, but recently I have discovered a bit of useful info by experience: If your phone IS on while charging, and you take it off when fully recharged, cycle your phone's power before you stick it back in your pocket. Why? Because a phone when first turned on negotiates RF power transmission strength with the tower. If this negotiation is made with the phone plugged in, the RF output will be determined based on line power, and not battery power. Switching to battery will then result in reduced RF output (if the phone doesn't properly dynamically adjust - which it's supposed to do, but often does so with less-than-favorable results). By cycling the power off and on again, you force your cell phone to negotiate RF transmission strength based on available battery power, and it often results in "more bars", and a more stable signal.
