Ok, forgive my ignorance, but I have a real hard-on for a style of gun lately. I am looking for an AR-15 style rifle. I can only see spending the cash for a gun that could be used for hunting as well as plinking, Whitetail Deer but some Elk or Larger would be a possibility, but not a good possibility. I have seen the .223, but I know of few guys around my hunting area that use .223. My friend uses a AR chambered in .223 and he loves it, but I have my reservations. Any help and opinions are opreciated. I am going this week to look at a Les Baer that has been used but it is out of my price range...looking at around $600 or so, so used would be fine.

Tommy, there are some AR rifles chambered in .308 but you'll have a hard time getting one for under $600 unless you find a deal on a used one. The 6.8mm is also out there, again same price wise but I doubt it would be a smart choice for Elk. Even a .308 is borderline small for Elk size game. If it's really a big game gun you want, just get a good bolt action rifle. Bushmaster has a new (last few years) .450 chambering for their AR rifles and close in it has good energy I think, but I doubt it has any long range qualities, have not researched that one myself.
In all reality any AR platform is only going to be good for small to medium game or people. If you want a serious big game hunting rifle, get a 30-06 or larger bolt gun. BTW, using an AR in .223 for hunting is only legal for up to white tail deer in most states. Coyote, varmints etc are all fine but nothing bigger. GA didn't allow .223 for deer until 10yrs or so ago when better bullets became available for reliable kill shots.

I have a 30.06 for hunting, but if I did get an AR I would have to justify it by hunting with it, so the .308 is really what I think I would have to go with. I want to keep a level head and stick with a budget, but if the right deal come around, I can see spending around $1,500 or so. Elk is just a dream also...its here and I will be trying a few hunting trips with my new off time and relatives in other states. I am just really loving the thought of an AR, but I dont want just a .22, and I cant see jumping into a custom right off the bat. If anyone was looking, I am moving back to Michigan, so the rules are different for hunting than Virginia. I just dont hunt smaller to focus on an AR-15 22, even though I would have a blast with that gun.
RE: Michigan is .243 or bigger so .308 is it...

Anyone want to sell me on or dissuade me from buying a Glock 27? I'm on the fence at the moment.

Positive, just not sure one which one. In the past two weeks I've fired the Glock 27 and the M&P 40 subcompact. The two were interesting. I shot surprisingly awesome with the Glock. Tight groups, manageable recoil, solid feel, but fuck me dry to I not like the grips on it. The M&P felt great in the hand but I was not all that impressed shooting it. Maybe it was just the range gun, maybe an off day. Aside from the nice ergonomics, I just wasn't very thrilled with it. I've fired an XD40 subcompact and thought I would love it, but it's another one that left me kinda cold. Odd, since I really dig my XD45.
I'd love to hear some suggestions and experiences with the Glock 27 or any other subcompact. I think I'm going .40 this time out, so that's what I'm focusing on. I haven't got any interest in another 9mm or .45 at the moment.
