At times, I thought I was watching a cheaply made Desperado. There were definite flashbacks to other Grindhouse flicks for me.

Guys, the point is that the original "grindhouse" movies, back in the late '60s and early '70s were incredibly bad, poorly edited, had no real plotline and no social relevance, made for $20K, and full of gratuitous nudity and violence. A "remake" of a grindhouse movie should be the same.
The only problem with this one, was that Rodriguez tried to insert social commentary into it.

The line about the border? I'd say that Rodriguez wrote it, and Alba just delivered it. They really needed to push that one over the top, to make it work in the "crappy cinema" genre though. They should have pulled in tight on her face, at a weird angle, and had her snarl it our with a scowl on her face. I don't know if that would have worked with her baby face, but it would have been (worse) better

I don't have a problem with the social commentary. I already saw Machete before I ever saw Machete - I just didn't know it.
You take Desperado and Planet Terror and combine them and you have Machete. There are the same exact scenes from both movies.

I think that if I hadn't seen the other flicks first I would have like this one better. Maybe.
