Savannah-Chatham police are investigating a fight caught on video and posted on YouTube that happened during the St. Patrick's festival weekend.

The video shows several women fighting outside and inside a red SUV, a man watching and then participating in the fight by hitting the vehicle and forcing the open door into the combatants while a crowd watches and encourages the participants.

Two police officers arrive on scene and force the man to the ground, striking his legs with a baton. As the officer secures the man, one of the women who appears bloodied from the fight pushes the officer. The officer chases her away by striking her on her legs with the baton.

After placing handcuffs on the man, the officer pursues the woman. He pulls her back to the scene by the belt on her trousers, forces her to the ground beside the man and secures her as other officers rush in.

Police say the officer has been placed on administrative leave, pending the investigation.

"The video vividly shows part of what happened, but it does not show all that transpired," said Savannah-Chatham police chief Willie Lovett. "It is important that we know all sides of the situation before we comment further."

I'm not so sure the officer wasnt (almost) justified in his actions. The girl was pretty violent and the dude too. They were violent and from what I saw, did not comply with the officers commands. It did look like he had control of the girl when he slammed her to the ground though

That was total overkill, he could have put her against the Explorer and cuffed her.

There was no reason to drop her at that point.

Multiple people to worry about, one already mosied off the scene, put 'em all on the ground... way easier to catch someone trying to flee the scene when they have to get up off the ground before taking off running...

I think the baton use looked a bit over the top to me... and completely ineffective at that... should have gone straight to the taser IMHO. Cop tells you to do something, you either comply or they use force... easy.

That's the one thing that's almost ALWAYS apparent in these 'police brutality' videos... stupid motherfuckers trying to resist the inevitable... You fight against what they are asking you to do and you lose. Simple.
