It would not upset me enough to write a letter about it.

Even if it did I sure wouldn't post it here. I made a comment yesterday about not wanting to live with a gay male back when I was in the Marines and that turned in to a clusterf*ck. Nothing spewed in that conversation changed my mind...I still don't want to live with one.

Ok back to this subject...like I said...I wouldn't write a letter about it BUT if it bothers you that much...the letter you posted above looks fine to me...not too harsh or soft.

I agree that the teacher shouldn't be using a term like this with 5th grade students...the special needs kids have it tough enough as it is.

*cliffnotes* It wouldn't really bother me and I wouldn't write a letter but if it bothers him then his letter looks fine.

This.

I wouldn't write a letter. What were you going to do... MAIL it?? Call her today, let her know you don't appreciate the content of her language choices. Be nice. Be respectful - that woman has your child for the entire day... or shall I say, that woman has to put up with your child for the entire day.

I get it, you don't *like* it. It's OK to not like something. It is NOT ok to get the administration all fired up because she said a word the rest of us don't think is a "bad word."

Dear Son\Daughter

It was brought to my attention that your teacher used a phrase that I would not allow you to use in my house. While I am disappointed in your teachers behavior, I feel it necessary to remind you that your teacher is there to insure that you are instructed on the material in the course. It is your responsibility to learn the material in the course using both teachers instruction and materials\assignments provided.
It is also your responsibility to respect the teacher \ student relationship.
Throughout life you will come across people who say things in ways you may find questionable. It is important that you learn that people communicate in many ways. In a professional relationship such as student\teacher relationship, where the objective is transfer knowledge it is of vital importance that you focus on the information being delivered to you, not the method of delivery.

Now lets look at what happened the other day.

What did your teacher say to the class after several of your classmates acted inappropriately?
“...need to pay attention or they will wind up in the retard class”

The message being delivered to you is clear. If you do not focus on your studies you will pay the price academically.

Summary: I am not concerned with the phrasing used by your teacher. I raised you to know that's not an appropriate thing to say and therefore I am not concerned with what you hear from others because I know you know the difference between right and wrong. If I find out you are one of the retards in class causing trouble you are grounded.
....

Hey I'm tired of the way the US has become too soft.. but for kids, as impressionable as they are at that age, it sends the wrong messages about handicapped individuals.

I agree talk to her about it, if you're not satisfied or have further issues, escalate... but at least address it with her... just like in the military, solve it at the lowest level then go up the chain.

good luck

The teacher shouldn't use that type of language but do you? Are you perfect in your speech around your children? There is nothing I hate worse than to listen to a parent go off about the way another adult talks around their kids but uses foul and inappropriate language at home all the time. Or they let their kids watch programs that use foul or inappropriate language. Hypocritical ftl...
