Yeah, but McCallister's and Starbucks offers it specifically for you to use gratis to draw in customers. These people pay for it for their own personal and expect it to be that way. Why not tap off of their cable TV or water line too? Do what you want but if I find out you're tapping off mine you will seriously have a laptop shaped paperweight. You can easily obtain programs that will slag your hard drive, CPU, RAM, and wireless RT. Seriously, this shit's easy to get all I do is call a guy and you're out your laptop.

I work for a Sub of AT&T. I normally work with the ariel trucks but often I work with dig crews. We see people steal some crazy stuff as we dig for phone cable.
Cable is the most stolen. But we've seen people steal gas, electric, water, etc. One guy tapped into a 6" gas main and fed it to his house. No fucking clue how he did it. When you bust a 6" main that shit flys out like crazy. But I've seen them tap into water mains too. One guy rigged up a system that allowed water to flow around the meter. But he put in a much smaller tubing to his water meter so that he had some water flowing through but not his normal. Guy was operating a 6bedroom house for probably the cost of a trailer. Saw another guy steal water from his neighbors irrigation system. People go to amazing lengths to steal shit. As for stealing internet. Man up, and get your own stinkin internet. Then secure the bitch and enjoy watching pron at lightspeeds.

Coffee shops with WiFi undoubtedly know the risk they are assuming in non-patrons of their establishment using their service. I imagine they take some measures to limit their exposure. And patrons are paying for coffee, etc, and in exchange get to use the internet. This to me is no different than stealing cable by running a line to your house from the source. Your neighbors might be naieve to assume their bandwidth won't be used if they don't secure their network, but that doesn't mean they deserve to pay for your internet usage. |

Are you offering your neighbor some sort of compensation for the loss in connection speed that was mentioned previously? If not, then yes it's theft. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors isp connection. (It's on page 83) JC

FYI in Florida that can be punished as a felony. Don't know about your state.

McDonald's is broadcasting a connection with the express purpose of allowing customers to use it. Your neighbor is broadcasting a connection with the express purpose of using it himself. Unless you work something out with him personally, it's stealing.

If you were on my network not only could I tell what sites you were surfing, I could also likely walk right into your computer and have anything that I wanted from you. After all, you'd be inside my network. Muhuhahahahahaha! No, I'm not exaggerating for comedic effect. |

If you really want to have some fun, you should setup your own wireless router so his PC will connect to your network. Then you can alter his internet traffic. I'd go for something subtle like introducing occasional random profanity into his outgoing emails.
