I wouldn't be surprised. According to the Beebs, the protesters are headed for the Presidential palace, and have already begun to gather at the state run TV station.

If someone in the Army doesn't man up and escort this asshole out, shit's going to get ugly in the next few days.

I honestly thought it was over....that the VP had made his threats...and ordered the Army to go use violence to end the demonstrations...another Tianamin Square...and the Army said "No" and was taking over via a coup.

But....it appears that fell through...some shady back room deal that continues to disregard the will of 80 million people.

It's curious that he is worth $70B himself...while over half the citizens of his country live on $2 per day or less.

It's even more curious that he is "our" guy....sickening, really.
The Devil you know is better than the Devil you dont. Having Saddam running Iraq was better for us than the cluster thats going on now. Iran was so preoccupied with him that they didnt have time to build nukes.

Couldnt agree more. You may not like the lion tamer, but at least he's keeping the lions under control. The Saddam situation is a lot like that.

Anyway, he's gone, and the army is in charge, promising a smooth transition to democracy. Well see how this goes.

Great, they got rid of him.
Now its time to actually deal with the problem.
Systematic corruption in all levels of government and crappy economy.
Elect your way out of that one....

This is pretty much in line with my thoughts on Egypt.

Fine, Mubarak is gone, but their nation's economic problems remain. Those aren't likely to get any better with their current leadership vacuum. There is a pretty good chance if their future leadership isn't pretty pro-America and pro-Israel they are going to see much of the $1 billion+ in aid we send them dry up too.

Then there is the question of what their new government will end up becoming. Of course there is the possibility that extremists are going to decide they want in on the new government, through elections if possible or violence if necessary. Then you have the potential for some in the temporary military leadership deciding they don't want to be quite so temporary.

This is far from over and anyone who claims to know what Egypt is going to become probably doesn't know what they are talking about. As I watch the media falling all over each other to see who can gush the most about this wonderful transformation in Egypt I am reminded of why I believe the media is pretty much made up of idiots.

I don't think we should have done anything to try and stop this from happening and I also don't think anything we could have done would have worked. That said, I'd guess there is about a 50/50 chance whatever the new government in Egypt ends up being will openly hate America and Israel and it is effectively guaranteed that the new government will not be as friendly toward us as the old one.
