What's the brand/model. You're probably going to have to reset the bios. Gonna find out if it has a removable cmos battery or one that's soldered on or a cmos reset jumper.

Dell 1723 Vista... I'll pull the cover and check thanks. As of now it won't do anything past a quick flash at power up, then blank.

It is early so you may have posted and I missed it: after the initial bios stuff, you said you don't get the windows splash screen - do you get anything at all or do you get an error?

Need more information. Does it display anything on the built-in LCD? Does it make any sounds/beeps? Does it perform the power on self test, then just stop? Not enough here for a diagnosis.

Sorry, okay it turns on, flashes Dell on the screen and then black. I was able to get it to display on the external monitor with f8 . It then shows start up repaIr until it gives up . I've removed the battery, back up battery and unplugged it and will mess with it more when I get home. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

During the power on self test hit the F12 key, then select "hard disk diagnostics" from the menu that appears. Sounds like your HDD is pooched.

Sounds like bad RAM to me. You at least get a message stating something about not being able to find a bootable drive if the HD is bad. If any RAM is bad, what you're describing is about as far as you get. It could also be a bad CPU.
