Given that both of us were talking to him, at the same time, there would have been no 'walking up.' At least if he had done it then it would have shown some balls, given that we were obviously there together. No tact, but at least balls.

Yeah, maybe I'm losing something in the translation. But, the only thing I see wrong with it is the hostess went to you. Unless that hostess knew you weren't dating and were just friends.
