It's for T mobile, they don't really have LTE yet.

I was chatting with Straight Talk about whether or not I could use my unlocked GSM phone as a hotspot on their $45/mo unlimited. They said that even though I'd be able to use all my phone's capabilities, that "we don't support hotspot". WTF does that mean?

Hi millyh. My name is Straight Talk Debbie and I will be addressing your question. Though we offer unlimited browsing but not to the extent that you can use the phone as a modem for your Laptops or Personal Computers. This kind of usage will contribute a great impact on the carrier’s network and service level and may result into system issues. Phone data service will be automatically suspended if customers will be caught tethering their phones with any of the devices mentioned for the use of wireless synchronization. Hope this clarifies your concern. Thanks.
WTF do they care? Regardless if you're hotspotting, your phone isn't going to download data faster than normal. If current network conditions can provide 10 mbps, then that's all you're getting.

People who tether use a ton of data. If you are eating data, you are using up bandwidth someone else could be using. They restrict use to one device in hopes that you won't use as much data.

Some people let others hop on their hotspot too, which definitely hurts them by you giving them a free ride.

You don't pay for a constant bandwidth stream at a given bandwidth like home ISPs, cell networks can't support that, you have to share or the network would be bogged down.
