That's what I thought too...

And everyone I've ever heard on the topic has said that higher octane doesn't improve mileage. I'd be surprised that you can measure a difference based on octane alone if your engine doesn't need higher octane or you don't adjust it for higher octane. Your bike just might need a bit more octane, hence the reason you get a 4-5% bump in mileage. And with more advanced engine management higher octane might very well give better mileage, but only be cause engine management retards the timing a bit with lower octane(in other words read your manual and use the fuel grade they tell you to).
I have done this with my old SV and my EX500, both of which do not have spark knock control. I am not joking...I always got 2mpg more with using higher octane.

According to a 2007 study, 23% of the barrel of oil was used for heating oil and diesel fuel in the U.S. I am not sure if you can use more or less though.

I wasn't implying they did, But they could still like a little more octane, vs less. And if they both got 2 more mpg, I'd suggest it was density that increased.

But in that time the EPA made us all run Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel.

you could also look at it like this-you werent getting more mpg with the higher octane, but by using the lower octane, it was killing your mpg by 1-2....

and you would be surprised what some engine builders knows about chemical compounds, they are some smart mofos...atleast the ones i know and learn from are

Well consider the ULSD opened a whole can of worms... made piping it more difficult. Hell, the machine at my work just to measure the ULSD cost like $20k and has to be serviced every year.
