Need advice from those of you with employees
I just had one of my employees come into my office and ask what I thought about her applying for a job listed in the paper. Am I right to be pissed about this? I've just always thought that was a BIG workplace no no.
Maybe I'm just old school. What do you guys and gals think?

Agreed. Either she's just stupid, or she's only half-stupid and thinks it will help her get more money from you. Either way = FAIL.

What type of job is it?
How old is she? What is your relationship like? Generally it would be taboo but if she is young she may asking you as a friend or father figure or mentor rather than a boss.

What he said. Depending on the relationship, I have spoken with past bosses about this type of thing to get their insight and advice without negative connotations.

I don't think she was angling for a raise. Maybe she's just naive. Who knows?

I had this happen. While I wasn't pissed,I wasn't exactly happy. I told my guy to do what he needed to do. I then set up interviews at his shop, in case I had to replace him.

If shes angling for a raise like that, I'd let her go. Thats tacky and inappropriate.
A really great boss has not only the companys well being in mind but also their employees. Is she in a dead end position? No room for improvement? Would it make for a better future for her to move on from where she's at? |

She didn't do anything wrong IMO and the suggestions to let her go are a little nauseating. People should never feel loyalty to a company or corporation because a company or corporation is incapable of feeling loyalty in return. ontwo, totally not a slam on you or your management BTW.
