Hell, we had half of the Greater Toronto Area lose internet access, a few years back, because a couple of morons hacked open a utility box looking for copper wire. Rather than realizing that they had the wrong stuff and giving up, they just kept cutting.

There have been a bunch of crispy critters around here when folks tried breaking into power relay stations to steal the bare copper.

Seriously. Unlike pawn brokers, they don't have to try and keep records of where the stuff comes from.
