Just bought a used one for $600. It's like new though. Retails for $1000. Setting it up now...

I just went through all the chest exercises found in the fitness guide that comes with it. This shit is no joke.

i've read that you should lift your heaviest weight the first set and back it up by 5 lbs for the 2nd/3rd set. reason being: lifting during the first set incorporates the large muscle (it does all the work), by lessening the load on the 2nd/3rd set you are working the small muscle fibers (behind the large one) to create a better, rounder muscle. (i subscribe to oxygen, that's where i got this)

so there's a couple different views on that now.

Ok been away for a few days and after logging on and seeing this thead update realized I never did own a Bowflex...it was a Soloflex...maybe that's why I didn't like it...bunch of rubberband weights.

I vary my routine between high weight/low reps and low weight/high reps.

When I lift heavy, my first set is the heaviest. I then drop the weight for each successive set and do the same amount of reps.

When I lift light, the weight stays constant and I lift until I can't lift any more. I do a circuit, jumping from exercise to exercise without any rest.

I lift 3 days a week and do cardio 3 days a week. I take Saturday off.

I've been doing this routine for more than the last couple of years, and it has worked for me. Over the last 3 years, I have lost roughly 40% of my body weight and dropped from 40%+ bodyfat down to 13%. I spent the first year dieting only, then bought my gym equipment.

I have done all of my exercising at home, with nothing more than a basic freeweights set (bench, barbell, curl bar, 300 lbs. of weight) and a decent quality elliptical machine ($1200 or so).

The total investment in my equipment, including heavy duty flooring (not that crappy thin rubber stuff they sell you in the sporting goods stores), is about $2000.

If you want some good flooring, go to a place that sells farm equipment (Tractor Supply Co. in my area) and buy some "stable mats". They're 3/8" thick rubber mats used to line horse stalls and trailers. This stuff is indestructable. A 4' x 6' mat weighs nearly 100 lbs and will last forever for a home gym. You can drop weights on them all day long and they don't mark up, and don't shift around. Mine are on carpet. Other than being matted down some (should fluff right back up with a good vacuuming), the carpet underneath still looks brand new.

That's a good point, they are an awkward shape... maybe I will look into the other two you mentioned.
