That maybe true, but it's all bullshit. Can you define the differences in cadence and melody between "Death Metal" and "Horror Metal" ? No. You're a rock band that sings about zombies.

Christian rock is labeled as such, so Christians who like rock and roll, can listen to the sound that appeals to them, without feeling guilty about it.

There are minute differences in tone, speed, and lyrics. Some of the genre's specifically omit guitar solo's. If you listen to all metal types a lot you can tell the difference, but your right, to the casual observer, they would appear to be very very similar.

This much IS true.

But for every Christian you absolve from this guilt with that label, you probably turn off another 4 people. This thread should serve as evidence of that.

That's why I suggested just letting the music speak for itself, and avoid the labels.

Ok, so what happens when a "Speed Metal" band records a ballad?

Do they become a "Speed Limit" band?

Personally, I think all these titles are just bullshit made up by so called music critics, who can't think of a more creative way of explaining a certain sound.

But "speed" does not describe the lyrical content. Some metal genre's do some don't. I listen to ALL metal so I don't get caught up in the naming conventions. I know they exist but I don't base my buying habits on what label they fall under. If I like it, I listen to them regardless of their category. As I Lay Dying is a great example as mentioned above. They are a metal band that has christian members but they are not classified as a christian metal band.

Most Christians get upset if a 'Christian' band tries to go mainstream and leaves off the 'Christian' when describing what kind of band they are.

Switchfoot and POD are good examples. They actually get some play on mainstream radio and Christians are then upset that they 'sold out'. It's not really fair to the bands made of christian members with christian themed music who actually have talent and could make it to mainstream. They can't really win.

That's true of any genre. The core fans always get pissy when a band "sells out."
