Packing tape. It's clear as glass, costs virtually nothing, and you can stick a new piece on as soon as the previous one gets funky.

Alternately, they make some clear stuff for sticking on rocker panels, to protect car paint. That would wear like iron.

Stomp Grip padding, or whatever the hell its called. Mostly used on dirt bikes on high wear areas. I'm sure they make a clear that you could put on the troubled areas.
