Shrek drinking glasses recalled, could be toxic to kids’ health
By: Sean O'Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: Summer movie toys packed into Happy Meals at local fast food joints are like crack cocaine for kids. And in one case, the treat that comes with what you eat might be as harmful to your health as the illegal drug.

McDonald’s had to recall 12 million “Shrek” drinking glasses that had been handed out throughout the chain because Cadmium was found in the paint used to design the sides of the glasses. People who picked up a “Shrek” glass were warned by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to stop using them immediately and toss them in the trash.

In its recall notice, the CPSC said “long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects,” according to Reuters. Increased exposure to Cadmium, according to studies, can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems.

As of right now, the “Shrek” glasses posed a low-level health threat. “A very small amount of cadmium can come to the surface of the glass, and in order to be as protective as possible of children, CPSC and McDonald’s worked together on this recall,” said CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson.
