Well, they pushed Apple into Intel PC hardware standardization, which is responsible for dropping the costs of Apple's products dramatically. It forced them away from their proprietary hardware, and onto the lower cost Intel platform.
That cut costs by fucking half right there. The truth is, Apple had always been a software company, but they thought they were a hardware company. Now, realistically, they have evolved into a design company. That model seems to be working, and in terms of cost is way more efficient. They seem to be on a roll with successful product designs for a while now.
