Yeah, but the bike on the stands makes it easier. Then you can raise the rear with the straps to your desired height.

Um...ever replace steering head bearings? Hey I've only lifted my present bike once....to replace the triple and bearings after I hit a deer so I agree its not "common" but it is a reason to use straps.
