Duck blamed for massive QEW chain reaction collision

OAKVILLE A massive tractor trailer pileup which closed the westbound QEW for hours Tuesday was likely caused by – a duck.

Police said the crash, which sent three people to hospital occurred when an SUV in the middle lane braked for “wildlife crossing the highway” near Bronte Road at 11:10 a.m.

The wildlife was later reported to be a duck.

Other reports say the SUV driver stopped to avoid the duck and was rear-ended by a transport truck which was then hit from behind by an auto carrier.

Five other vehicles – most of them tractor trailers -- attempted to slow and became involved in a rear end chain reaction collision

Three tractor-trailers two straight trucks and an SUV were involved in the collision which sent three to hospital, all with minor injuries.

The driver of one truck had to be freed from his mashed cab by Oakville firefighters.

The westbound lanes were re-opened at 2:30 p.m.

One of the first things I remember being taught in driver's ed... an animal runs out in front of you, don't swerve, don't slam on your brakes, make small adjustments if possible, otherwise just hit it.

If it's not a 12 point buck or a moose, I'm going through it.

He was being followed by transport trucks, the drivers of which could see well ahead and could see no reason for a stop. If you nail the brakes in front of a transport, then you're likely getting a Peterbilt enema regardless of the following distance.

Sometimes the only reason needed to stop is that the vehicle in front of you has stopped.

Not on a major, limited access highway.

I forgot:

You're in Canada; where traffic never jams and all roads are single lane.
