Everytime I read a post of yours, I get a little dumber.

All in perspective:

I paid 3.95 for deisel today.

Talked to a friend of mine lives outside of London...he is paying in the neighborhood of $8.00 US/Gallon.....and the spot price for oil is the same for everybody...the difference is a. the value of the dollar vs euro and b. the amount of taxes that they pay for each gallon vs the piddling amount (relatively ) that we pay in taxes per gallon.

This chart http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/international/gas1.html shows the historical differences we have paid...that is why we continue to drive bigger cars, trucks and SUV's than the the rest of the world.....tack on 3-4 more bucks in taxes per gallon in this country and you'll see a massive shift towards public transportation and these kinds of POS

In most European countries, there is a per litre exicise tax, and then a percentage VAT (value added tax) which is added on each time the fuel is handled (from the importer of the oil, to the refiner, to the jobber or distributor, and then from the gas station of, 17.5%....so each time, you are taxed on not just the price of the fuel, but on the previous taxes added on....which adds up to about 188%, or about $4.50-5.00 over the original price of the fuel; compared to, depending on which state you live in; somewhere about $.55-.68 per gallon in this country.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline_tax

Like I said....all a question of perspective.

if i have to drive pieces of shit like that please shoot me..

i talk to people in europe all the time and they say its not a big deal to pay those gas prices.. they don't drive as much as we do.. most towns everything is in walking distance, etc. plus some of that goes to like nationalized health care, etc.

yeah VAT is a bitch.. 21% is what i pay on anything i ship from europe to the united states.. a good way to get around it is to ship from germany to mexico - there is not VAT because they have an agreement.. of course though then you have to pay duties into the U.S. but depending on what you are shipping it can save you some serious money to go that route..
