I think the original almost looks better. The 'after' has exposed the planes properly but the sky is now over exposed. With a proper HDR everything is exposed correctly.
And things that move are very difficult to do a true HDR...as you need 3 or more identical exposures.

That was just my first try with my new software. I will see how it looks with different exposures and layer the planes differently. I need to read some more and try to use maybe 5 photos instead of 3. I think the sky behind really was more of a pink/puple that day too(not to that extent) because we had a bit of weather blow through.
Seeing the P-51 fly in formation with the F-22 over Oceana sent chills up our spines, then seeing Fat Albert make a rocket assisted take off into the night sky just messed our pants.

I don't usually mess with other people's shots, but thought that this might look good. I matted the original over the "adjusted shot", at 75% opacity, then ran a quick unsharp mask. It's closer to an HDR shot this way; brings up the detail and brightness, without washing out.

That looks fucking awesome. And your tripod appears to be off-level.

hand held... I'll buy a nice tripod when I get back to the states... the one I have here is so shitty I'd rather not use it.
