Default Lost my chain........somewhere.

ok, so i'm leavig work the other day, merge on to the parkway and shift from 1st to 2nd and nothing.
rev the throttle a bit and i got no acceleration. so while i still have some speed i imediately coast onto the off ramp as i'm switching thru the gears.
when i finally come to a stop on the local road and start to look the bike over
low and behold i don't have a chain anymore.

i didn't feel or hear anything. just no power.
so i call the wife to go to Uhaul and get a trailer and pick me up.

anyway, my question (finally) is do i need to or am i supposed to get new spockets when i get a new chain?
the spockets actually look ok to me.

wanted the opinions of you more experienced guys............
front.....





as you can see the only damage(really) is the washer being bent on the nut some.

rear........



the teeth on both the spockets look prety good to me.

any recomendations?
get sprockets and chain, or is just a chain ok?
also what brand?

That washer has is always bent up- it prevents the nut from backing out. If you change that sprocket, you really need to flatten that washer all the way around. Any lip that touches the nut will make it a BITCH to remove.

looks like your teeth are still pretty decent, you can just get another chain if you want. Or you can regear it, just what you want to spend really.

Okay, it looks as though you did ask for opinions so...

Well whatever you do don't use a clip link again! The sprockets look okay to me! Too bad you have a 520 set-up, I have a used 530 chain I'd give you.

how many miles first of all? that front doesnt look quite right to me. I'd replace it.

LMK if you need a hand I have a chain press tool. Sprockets look prety good to me, how many miles are on them anyway?

Your sprockets look "OK" to me, though the front is showing some wear.

If you want to get the most from your new chain (in terms of longevity) replace the sprockets. Plus, it's kinda one of those, "well, as long as you're in there.." things.

As far as which brand goes- meh, chain is chain, as long as it's got the right rating for your bike, and o-rings. Stick to the name brands (D.I.D, EK, etc.) and buy whatever's on sale.

And, yeah, Rivet link > Clip link.

the bike has a lil over 12k mi. on it.
when i bought the bike it had about 5900 mi. on it and i definitely haven't changed anything. so who knows how many miles are them.


and Tommy, i just might take you up on that offer. i'll def. let you know.

You can't really see sprocket tooth wear until it's really bad. A few thousandths difference in pitch will accelerate chain wear. Unless it the sprockets were nearly brand spankin' new (which they obviously aren't), I'd replace them as a set - with a steel rear (eff aluminum for street use, especially non-hardened). And yes, rivet >> clip (clips can be made 'safer' by using a dab of silicone adhesive over it - but a rivet link is a sure thing).

Good point! Besides, if you do some shopping, you can get front and rear sprockets for $50-60 total. Not a ton of money imho. Like AMJ said, you're in there anyway....
