On another note: I've often wondered where there are hard obstacles at likely crash points on a lot of tracks...

Most tracks are designed so that there is plenty of runoff room to avoid hard obstacles, but some tracks are designed really really bad, or just old. Here is a video from porks thread, wait till they run through the newly installed hairpin, there is a 3 foot wall across the track, plus the inside of the hairpin has a small wall, then that same corner on the outside looks like an amacco barier on the outside of the same turn. That track has plenty of other turns there with no runoff.
