Default Where to stay in Austin?

Asking for a friend, not sure yet if I'll make it.

Does anyone know what areas I should avoid while looking for lodging in Austin? I want to be close to downtown but still be able to afford it for the race weekend. I've found a few places - just want to make sure it isn't Hialeah...

I stayed at the Wyndham Garden inn at I-35 & 71. I thought it was a good compromise between value (downtown is expensive) and location (still a 5-min cab ride to South Congress. It was much cheaper than downtown locations and the hotel itself was very nice. My only complaint was that you couldn't walk to anything at all.

Anywhere you go in Austin, you gonna need a car. The city does not function without the automobile.

Most anywhere in Austin that weekend will be higher than normal. The area Sean in talking about will work if you have a vehicle or willing to take a cab.

If it's anything like F1 weekend they might want to stay downtown. Most of Austin will be one big party. There really isn't a bad area downtown as far as hotels go. The closer they are to 6th street the closer to the party they are.

They will be running shuttles to the race from downtown - that's because COTA is out in the middle of nowhere. There are no hotels out there.

Thanks guys.

Zoomie (or other locals),

Is Travis Heights is decent?

Though it is a littel further from downtown...it still looks close enough to taxi it and not spend big bucks.

I doubt it.

I figured it was an area or town/part of town.

Yeah, it's an old neighborhood across the river from downtown.

Travis heights has some bed and breakfast places (one or two, not many). There is the Hotel San Jose nearby (S. Congress), but those are all small places and likely to fill up quick.
