at the aunt...I was just thinking that didnt he try to use a pardon or some such for his aunt? Then back down and say she had to follow the same channels as everyone else?

No
His Aunt just happened to be going through the process while he was running for office. Having exposure to immigration law though family (some are lawyers and some have been though the process) it can be a pretty drawn out process and there are tons of factors involved.
Based on the details of her case, she would still be here even if no one ever heard of Barack Obama.
