iPhone alarm glitch leaves users fuming - Page 4

You'll have to excuse me, I'm having a tech backlash. I just turned 50, and it's either that, or start yelling for kids to get outta my yard.

All my life, I've been the guy that had all the latest gadgets, and tech toys.

Anymore, I don't care for any of it, and care even less to read the fucking manual for it. I guess I just reached saturation.

I now lust for simple, elegant, self-contained, computer-independent, dedicated gear, that just simply WORKS.

I still have all the tech shit, and if I really need to, I can use it. I just don't like it anymore, and find that it often complicates simple tasks that we used to accomplish previously with far simpler tools, and with greater reliability.

I guess I could sum it up as; SIMPLIFY.

See, told you I was getting old.

ahh, but isint stuffing the functions of 20+ things into one wafer thin device simplifying in and of itself?

Sometimes it isn't. I'll give an example: I had to set up a timer on a light. The built-in computerized electronic timer was rather complicated to set up, had only a two button interface. Confusing. I spent five minutes reading it, and was still confounded. Finally, I set the thing just to stay "on", and I grabbed one of those simple little Intermatic mechanical timers with the pull-out pins that I had lying around, and bang; I was fucking done literally inside of 30 seconds.

See? Sometimes, "simple" is more to do with the interface.

As a musician and recordist, I've watched as mixing boards and tape machines were all replaced by the computer. Everything integrated all in one, so simply, as you put it.

...Only, usability kinda sucked ass. Everything was 3 fucking menus deep, hard to find in real time. Access and control suffered.

Now, they make "control surfaces". These plug into your computer to give you back all those tactile knobs, and faders...just like the old consoles!

Yay! Wait...we made that trip why?

Shit is actually way more fucking complex, and it even crashes and shit!

So yeah, you can do amazingly fucking cool shit in Logic and Protools, but God, I miss my fucking 16 track machine.

Shit just fucking worked...Y'know?

It probably wasn't even the iphone, it's probably it's stupid users don't know how to actually use the phone. Kinda like how the antenna issue isn't actually an issue, it's the stupid users again not knowing how to hold the phone.

I use my phone as an alarm, but I've seen where the clock on my phone and others have gotten screwed up since it's linked with the service. I was just saying that if you REALLY need to get up, then have a backup device, not just multiple alarms set on your phone.

Too many "variables" and you can't even change the battery...I'll keep my Droid WHICH WAKES ME EVERY MORNING.

Lol...well put. I'd only add that if I can do it better and after without a phone or computer nowadays, I will reach for an old school dedicated device first.

I don't care how old it is, or how unfashionable...often hardwired devices are both simpler, and more elegant to use.
