Default Snakes On a Plane - ER, In a Garage

So we've been living here for 2.5 years now and never seen a snake on our property up until a few weeks ago. Now we've been seeing some black snakes pretty frequently...including some behind our neighbor's house next door. Since they've been keeping to the yard, and slither off and hide when they see me, I haven't minded them too much. They weren't bothering me. To my wife's dismay, I've simply been chasing them out of our yard when possible...ignoring her pleas to kill them....telling her they are harmless. Yesterday, they crossed the line.

They sent out a scout to infiltrate the holiest of places....my garage. I won't tolerate that. Not only did the 3' rat snake desecrate my cave, but he just stared at me in utter defiance. I had just cleaned up the garage a bit, so I was hesitant to draw any blood there. Using a small garden shovel, I scooped him up since he had curled up into a ball and tossed him out. I then chased him off the driveway and to the side yard where hopefully, his brethren witnessed me delivering the fatal blow. I scooped it up and walked down to the edge of our landscaped property and flung it 30' down the hill into the brush and trees. Raising my mini-shovel in fury, I screamed at the other snakes....."This is WAAARRRRRR!!!!!"

Not really. But I did have the urge to scream that. I resisted, since a neighbor 2 houses down was watching me from his porch while he tended to his grill.

We've had a few harmless snakes in the yard here and the wife and I let them stay around since they aren't that big...no more than a foot or so and are non poisioness such as Brownsnakes and Wormsnakes.

I have to admit though when I was laying up under the Jeep Cherokee lastnight in the garage changing the oil...had a 3' rat snake or any other snake that size come slithering up to me while I was laying flat on my back....!!

I'd probably have a knot or two on my head from banging it on the underside of the Jeep but I would have been putting some distance between us until I could "analyze" the situation.

Yea it's you and that Australian guy. Snake "rights" are definitely a tough sell! They're right up there with spiders, rats and bats with most people.

I admire your strength in not giving in and killing them all.

Tommy, I got your back!

FYI-In many areas, if you find an exceptional snake (large, friendly, etc), or any other wild animal for that matter, you can contact a local animal refuge or what not and many of them will take care of it for you. They capture them, and depending on the termperament, oftentimes they use them for teaching and training purposes. Just saying.
