Escaped Inmate On Loose For 3 Days
Arcade Comeaux Jr. Last Seen In Baytown Area On Monday

POSTED: Wednesday, December 2, 2009
UPDATED: 8:52 am CST December 2, 2009

HOUSTON -- The search for a Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmate who escaped while being transported between prisons entered a third day Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

TDCJ officials said Arcade Joseph Comeaux Jr., 49, escaped while being transferred from the Estelle Unit in Huntsville to the Stiles Unit in Beaumont on Monday.

He was shackled and seated in a wheelchair inside a van during the transfer. He has been using a wheelchair for at least 10 years, officials said, and requested one for the transfer. TDCJ officials said Comeaux told them he had paralysis on the left side of his body.

Comeaux was the only inmate in the van.

Investigators said Comeaux pulled out a gun and hijacked the van in Montgomery County. He allegedly fired a shot at the guards. The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office has filed warrants for his arrest.

Officials said Comeaux had the officers stop in Baytown, where he escaped with four guns, including a 12-gauge shotgun and two pistols.

Comeaux was wearing one of the officers' gray correctional uniforms and black boots as he walked off, leaving the wheelchair behind. Investigators said it is possible that he is no longer wearing that uniform.

Detectives have received about 100 tips and are searching all over the state. He was last seen near Lee College in the Baytown area on Monday morning.

Comeaux is serving a life sentence for indecency with a child in Harris County, aggravated sexual assault in Brazos County and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Fort Bend County.

While in prison, Comeaux was confined to his maximum-security cell for 22 hours a day.

Prison officials said despite being in a wheelchair, he stabbed his wife multiple times with a metal object during a prison visit in 1999. Leola Comeaux was treated for wounds to her face, head and chest. She survived.

As a result of that attack, Comeaux was given two additional life sentences for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

His family, who lives in northeast Houston, did not want to speak on camera, but told deputies that they have not heard from Comeaux. Officers have been posted outside the home in case Comeaux shows up.

Leola Comeaux said she is terrified and hopes the situation ends soon.

Detectives said they are talking to anyone who has had any communication with Comeaux while in prison, including visitors and people who have written him letters.

Comeaux is black, 6 feet tall and 200 pounds.

Anyone who believes they have seen Comeaux is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS or the U.S. Marshals Office at 713-718-4259. Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward and the U.S. Marshals Office is offering an additional $10,000 reward.

Comeaux should be considered armed and dangerous, officials said.
